AZBN Will Match “More Business of Being Born” Pledges!
Double Your Pledge for 8 More Days!
The “More Business of Being Born “project has $72,344 pledged towards their $100,000 goal. This project will ONLY be funded if at least $100,000 is pledged by Thursday, July 14th.
We Will Match Your Pledge and Give You a Chance To Win!
- We are so excited to announce that the Arizona Birth Network will match your donations, up to $515! We hope this will give the project a little bit of extra boost that it needs to get funded. If this project does get funded, then the Arizona Birt Network is hoping to plan a screening of the new “Business of Being Born” films once they are released.
- We will also be selecting a donor at random for a surprise giveaway.
- Certain pledge amounts receive a gift back – like a copy of the DVD, digital rental of the DVD, signed t-shirts and books, and much more!
If you are interested in helping fun “More Business of Being Born”, then consider donating any dollar amount of $1 or more by the deadline via the “More Business of Being Born” Kickstarter website. Your pledge will ONLY be accepted/charged if the project meets its financial goal by July 14th.
From the Kickstarter website:
“More Business of Being Born” is our new series of four films that deepens the conversation about childbirth options, supporting every woman’s right to empowerment and accurate information during the birth process. We’ve also completed a 28-minute Classroom Version of “The Business of Being Born” with a comprehensive study guide to reach younger women in University settings.”
To participate in our funds-matching drive:
- Log on to Amazon.com and set up an account with your financial information (Kickstarter currently only accepts funds through Amazon)
- Visit the MBOB Kickstarter page and take 1 minute to pledge your support.
- Kickstarter will email you a confirmation (this confirmation does not include any of your credit card information, only the dollar amount you pledged)
- Forward the confirmation to leighasteele@gmail.com and the AZBN will match your donation!
- We may publish your name (but not pledge amount) on our blog. However, if you’d rather be listed as anonymous, please just let us know when you forward the confirmation.
Feb Giveaway #1 – CycleBeads
Happy Valentine’s Day!
You ever wondered why there are so many babies born in late October and early November? Blame it on Valentine’s Day! ![]()
So in honor of Valentine’s Day, and to help with the natural tracking of cycles and fertility, we are thrilled to offer a set of CycleBeads for the first of THREE February blog giveaways!
From the CycleBeads website:
CycleBeads® is an easy way to plan or prevent pregnancy naturally. This natural birth control option enables a woman to track her cycle and know if she is on a day when pregnancy is likely or not. CycleBeads is used by women around the world because it is:
- More than 95% Effective*
- Side-Effect Free
- Easy to Use
- Inexpensive
- Educational & Empowering
CycleBeads is a color-coded string of beads that represents the days of a woman’s cycle and helps her use a natural family planning method called the Standard Days Method®. This family planning method is designed for women with cycles between 26 and 32 days long**.
To use CycleBeads, a woman simply moves a ring over the beads to track each day of her cycle. The color of the beads lets her know whether she is on a day when pregnancy is likely or not and whether her cycle length is in the appropriate range for using this natural family planning method.

Showin’ Some ♥…and Giveaways….
So, it’s been a few months. Or more.
We are sorry.
Between babies, kids in school, jobs, the holidays, decompressing from the amazing Birth Blooms in the Desert Conference, and reveling in the truly gorgeous Arizona weather….we’ve been unable to keep this blog going on a regular basis. We are an all-volunteer Board of four members and sometimes, well, our steam just done runs out!
But have no fear – our passion for this organization and our community at large is always present!
Thankfully, the winds of change are blowing in and providing bursts of energy and commitment once again.
Thank you for sticking around.
This year, we have plans for some fun community-based events that we will be sharing soon but would also love your ideas. Send your suggestions and thoughts to us!

Winner of Sept Giveaway + Cloth Diaper Seminar Info!
Congratulations to our September Blog Giveaway Winner, who receives a Little gPants gift set from gDiapers:
Julianne Ferguson
We asked readers to tell us why they wanted to win these Little gPants. Here is what Julianne told us:
“I love the look of the g diapers, they sound like a great alternative for day trips.”
Julianne, you are right! gDiapers are a perfect solution for the eco-conscious mama who wants the convenience (but not the environmental impact) of a disposable while running errands or taking day trips! We hope gPants gives you a bit more freedom to enjoy those times!
For hands-on demonstrations and information on the world of cloth diapering, don’t forget to attend our “Birth Blooms in the Desert” conference on October 23rd. Zoolkins employees (formerly Wildflower Diapers) will be hosting a seminar on Cloth Diapering 101 and will have cloth diaper samples on-hand to demonstrate different options and techniques.
Thank you to gDiapers for their generous donation to the Arizona Birth Network!
September Blog Giveaway! Enter by Monday, 9/19
Do you like the convenience and ease of disposable diapers but also love the sustainability and eco-friendly impact of cloth diapers?
Then g-diapers may be for you (or…your baby)!
From the gDiapers website: gDiapers earth friendly diapers are a great alternative to disposable diapers. gDiapers are environmentally friendly diapers, no landfill required. 50 million disposable diapers enter landfills each day, where they sit for 500 years. And that’s just the beginning.
We are pleased to offer a two pack of “little gPants” for this month’s raffle!
This gift pack includes one pair of genuine vanilla bean and one pair of great orange little gPants. Size S. Swishstick is included in pack as well. Use with gDiapers biodegradable gRefills or gCloth inserts (NOT included).
Thank you to gDiapers for their generous donation to the Arizona Birth Network!

Winner of Sept Giveaway + Links on Bonding
Congratulations to our August Blog Giveaway Winner, who receives a cuddly Snug & Tug blanket by Go Mama Go Designs:
Amanda McMahon
We asked readers to tell us about their favorite bonding moments with their baby and Amanda responded with:
“I love gazing into my babies’ eyes when they’re nursing.”
Thank you to everyone who responded with your favorite snuggly moments. And thank you to Go Mama Go Designs for their generous donation of the Snug & Tug swaddle blanket.
The power of snuggling and bonding with a baby extends a number of benefits to both baby AND a mother and father. “Bonding is that wonderful connection that happens between parent and child, that wonderful dance that Mother and Father and Baby develop with each other,” says Roni Leiderman, executive director and associate dean of the Family Center at Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl. Leiderman continues with “Bonding sets the stage for future interaction between the parents and the baby and for that wonderful unconditional love that develops.”
A large part of bonding happens unconsciously through the work of hormonal and chemical release. However, there are also simple things that parents can do to strengthen the bonds between them and their precious child. Ideas include:
- Infant Massage
- Singing and reading to your baby
- Breastfeeding or close contact when bottle-feeding
- Talking and gazing at your baby
- Learning and tending to your baby’s cues
Remember to be gentle on yourself as well, as a deep connection to your baby may take time. Getting to know a new person is a unique experience for every parent and baby!
“There’s so much discussion about bonding with a new baby that mothers often feel guilty if they don’t feel some incredible attachment to their new baby immediately,” says Edward Christophersen, a pediatric psychologist in Kansas City, Missouri. “But bonding is truly an individual experience, and it’s just as reasonable to expect the bond to develop over a period of time as it is for it to develop instantaneously.”
Below are some links that discuss developing a strong bond with your baby, both before they are born and after birth.
We’re Back!
The AZ Birth Network blog was on an unofficial hiatus while one of our Board members and blog authors, Leigh Steele, welcome her third baby: a boy!
Lyric Hawthorn was born at home on June 11 and welcomed with love by his big sisters.
To catch you up, a few updates from around our local birth community:
Babymoon Inn
Babymoon Inn, the only freestanding birth center in Phoenix, has made huge strides along their way to grand opening. A Department of Health inspection is scheduled this month and if they pass (fingers crossed!) then an official license to operate will be granted and doors will OPEN! Keep posted via their blog. We will certainly also pass along any news once we have it.
SuTRA Yoga Event
SuTRA Midtown Yoga, which hosts our monthly Phoenix Birth Circle, is looking for gorgeous pregnant bellies that would like to participate in a belly cast and art gallery event. More information to come!
Parenting/Meditation Course
Local yoga instructor and teacher, Sevak Singh, is offering a dynamic one-day seminar called “Developing the Person Inside the Parent”. on Saturday, July 31 from 8:30am – 2:30pm.
About The Course:
This workshop will give you specific skills to develop your complete Self, building stronger relationships and enjoyment in the child-like joy around you. Participants will explore their inner parent and find how it influences the outer parent. Common problems will be taken apart and given space to open up new methods to inspire and teach children in a way that can be heard and understood. Participants will do some yoga and meditation as well as group work to clear the path toward effective and fulfilling parenting.
Mom and Baby Expo
A FREE Baby and Mom Expo is being held on Saturday, June 26th from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.
